July in the Vineyards – Part Three: Nash Mill Vineyard by Jennifer

Before bringing some updates from our vineyard visits from last weekend (spoiler alert: things are heating up, with harvest drawing near), we wanted to flash back to our final late July vineyard tour. During a quick visit to Nash Mill Vineyard on Saturday, July 22, we continued with our series of check-ins at sites from which Waits-Mast sources pinot noir grapes. As we saw at Wentzel Vineyard earlier in the day, the fruit at Nash Mill has developed considerably since our trip to Anderson Valley in May.

Glen Park News Piece on Waits-Mast

Glen Park News Piece on Waits-Mast

We’re very neighborhood-oriented and the distinct character of all the different parts of San Francisco is one of the things that Brian and I love about living here.

Even though we’re in a big city, there’s still a small town feel in places like Glen Park village.

So, we were excited to be approached by the neighborhood paper, The Glen Park News, for a story about our winemaking operation. We chatted with Bonnee Waldstein and toured her (and her photographer husband) around the winemaking facility during one of our recent bottling and blending sessions.

Today, the Fall 2009 issue of the Glen Park News hit the street (literally…as you can only read it if you pick up a physical paper copy) and I took a walk to grab some copies for posterity. Stacks of the paper arrived today at various establishments in the village, including the dry cleaners, mailbox store, and Bird & Beckett books. I even noticed a number of merchants absorbed in the paper, including one of the librarians at the Glen Park Library.

There’s something very retro and comforting about people in the same village reading the same paper on the same day.

It brought me back to my days of high school journalism when we’d see the entire quad filled with students reading the paper that we’d just released that morning.

Coincidentally, the first people I saw in the village today were the author Bonnee and her husband Michael as they walked out the dry cleaner with their own copies of the News in hand. Glen Park sure feels more like a small town than a big city and that’s one of the reasons why.

Waits-Mast Wentzel Pinot Noir is Wine of the Week on Bottlenotes by Jennifer

Wow. We were so excited to get some buzz going about our wine this week. Bottlenotes named the Waits-Mast Family Cellars 2007 Wentzel Pinot Noir their “wine of the week” and highlighted our efforts in their “Daily Sip” email blast. According to Bottlenotes, this is sort of equivalent to getting a nod from the likes of Us Weekly and Daily Candy. They write:

“…Our favorite of the current release is the 2007 Wentzel Vineyard from the Anderson Valley. This Pinot has a rich dark-cherry nose and is full of bold dark-berry fruit and a touch of spice on the finish…”

Bottlenotes is a really cool online wine community and they have a particular interest in small production wines, like ours. Community members can learn about wine, post tasting notes (see the notes for our Wentzel pinot noir here), join wine clubs, purchase hand-selected wines, and follow Bottlenotes-penned Twitter updates about tastings and wine news. They also have a wedding and gift registry so that wine enthusiasts can create lists of bottles that they’d like to get as gifts.
